The Gachatha wet mill is a cooperative with around 1500 smallholder farmer members with each smallholder on average cultivating 150 trees. The general terroir of the Nyeri region where Gachatha is located is excellent for coffee growing due to consistently cool nights and warm days. This lot of coffee is composed of peaberries - usually two seeds (coffee beans) develop inside a fruit, with the seeds flattening each other in the coffee cherry. Occasionally, only one seed will fertilize and grow, leading to a coffee bean that is more rounded due to growing on its own. Due to the shape difference, peaberries are often separated from other lots to ensure even roasting. Each of these coffee balls reminds us of the sun - full of life and vigor. It also tastes of lemon, ginger and elderflower!
